given up on trying to fix my PC. it's served me well, but is now out dated and the hardware problems are definitely heat related and getting worse.
i was after a fast but quiet PC as a replacement, but in the end i got sucked in by pure power (and price). it seems if you want quiet you can add £100 - 200 onto the price of any system, meaning that only mid range systems were in my price range. i want top spec too so this deal from dell wasn't to be sniffed at. i can always change fans and stuff at a later date if it is too noisy...
yes it's the bottom of the i7 range, but that is still above the top of the AMD range and as i want it to last as long as it's predecessor, i don't want speed to become an issue as power hungry apps start appearing over the next few years.

Birthday karting and curry
at 09:09 0 commentsHaving enjoyed karting on mooney's stag, I decided to do it again and
this time managed to get enough people to do the proper grand prix. 10
laps qualifying saw me (much to my surprise) second on the grid for
the proper 50 lap race!
After a pile up in the first corner, there was a change of race
leader, but I still held second.
Then followed 10 laps of excellent racing where I managed to get into
first place several times. Then the driver in third caught up and it
got a bit scrappy. My concentrating on not letting third place past
allowed the guy in first to get away and with noone right behind him,
he left us all for dust...
My battle was then to hold on to second, which didn't last long as I
overcooked a corner, went wide and the guy behind me got past. I then
overcooked another corner trying to get second place back and ended up
in a wall, meaning that second place got away from me.
For most of the race after that I had clear track and just had to
maintain a good race speed.
With the tiredness setting in and having to overtake the back markers,
someone started catching me up and I really had to up my game to hold
them off. I was really pleased when I saw the chequered flag and
realised that I'd held onto third place!
Only when we stopped did I realise that theguy who'd been coming up
behind me at the end was actually in first place and had lapped
everyone except myself and the guy in second place ( who I'd started
to catch up again towards the end!)
As part of the grand prix package the first 3 places got trophies :-)
Special mention to our only femail driver who, although she came last,
got some great racing lines despite lacking the required fitness and
being too small for the kart!
The curry after was better attended with 14 people in the end. I had
garlic chilli chicken masala, mushroom rice and dall pakora. Not as
spicy as I've had before, but really tasty though.
My friends also got me some presents and a huge cake, a quarter of
which is still left, despite my parents and I having cake for
breakfast, lunch and dinner on Sunday and breakfast again today!
Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed my birthday celebrations and it
more than made up for the fact that I'm working my actual birthday.
